Reinventing Schools of Education: A Social Capital Strategy for Building the Capacity to Transform Public Education
Richard Halverson is a professor of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis at the UW-Madison School of Education. His work aims to bring the research methods and practices of the learning sciences to the world of educational leadership and interactive media. Rich co-directs the Wisconsin Collaborative Education Research Network and the Comprehensive Assessment of Leadership for Learning project and was a co-founder and co-director of the Games + Learning + Society Research Center. He holds affiliate appointments in the Educational Psychology and Curriculum and Instruction departments and is a fellow at the WIsconsin Institutes for Discovery. He is a former high school teacher and administrator and holds an MA in Philosophy and a PhD in Learning Sciences from Northwestern University. Rich is co-author (with Allan Collins) of Rethinking Education in the Age of Technology: The Digital Revolution and Schooling in America.
Assistant State Superintendent, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction
Sheila Briggs joined the Department of Public Instruction in February 2011, as Assistant State Superintendent of the Division for Academic Excellence. Teams under her direction include Content and Learning, Career and Technical Education, Educator Effectiveness, Literacy and Mathematics Team and Teacher Education, Professional Development and Licensing. Before coming to DPI, Sheila worked for 20 years in the field of education, with ten as an administrator within the Madison Metropolitan School District. While at MMSD, Sheila was the Director of State and Federal Programs, Elementary Lead Principal, Elementary School Principal, and general education teacher. Sheila received her PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2012. At home, she has a supportive husband and two children who attend public school in De Forest.
