“Saving Democracy in Wisconsin”
Matt Rothschild is the Executive Director of the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign. The WDC is a non-profit organization that tracks money in state politics and fights for campaign finance and other democracy reforms. Prior to joining the Democracy Campaign at the start of 2015, Matt was the editor and publisher of The Progressive magazine, where he worked for more than 30 years.
He is the author of You Have No Rights: Stories of America in an Age of Repression. In addition, he edited an anthology called Democracy in Print: The Best of The Progressive, 1909-2009.
His opinion pieces have run in the Chicago Tribune, the LA Times, the Miami Herald and a host of other newspapers. He’s appeared on Nightline, NPR, C-SPAN and WISC-TV, where he does election night commentary. You may have heard him as a regular guest on “The Week in Review” on Wisconsin Public Radio with retired WPR talk show host and current co-chair of the Madison Civics Club, Joy Cardin.
Matt’s presentation will be based on his forthcoming book that will be published by the UW Press in September, 12 Ways to Save Democracy in Wisconsin.
Matt claims democracy is on the chopping block right now, and Wisconsin must adopt reforms to save it. Among these reforms are: banning partisan gerrymandering, changing campaign finance laws, uprooting racism and moving toward economic democracy.
Matt will explain why these reforms and others are necessary and answer your questions and respond to your views on the state of politics and policy in Wisconsin. He will also discuss whether there is hope for positive change in 2021.
